After two weeks, Caleb and Max still hadn’t spoken. It was not for wanting on Caleb’s part. The teenager sent his boyfriend funny gifs, memes, and emotionally wrenching pleas to preserve what they had before the incident. Caleb was positive that the two had a love strong enough to salvage their relationship, regardless of what they were forced to watch and do on that harrowing evening.

It was Friday night, and Caleb had just finished a comedy with his father. They both needed it. A text message was received on the teenager’s phone, which caused Caleb to practically jump out of his skin.

“What is it?” Steve asked.

“Max finally responded,” Caleb glowed. “He wants to meet up tomorrow night. He says he just needed some time and he misses me.”

“Great, kiddo,” Steve said. “I’m happy for you.”

“Did you hear something?” Caleb asked.

“I hope I didn’t read your faces wrong,” a voice said from the dark of the dining room. “I don’t think I did.”

Steve and Caleb looked to each other for understanding.

“No,” Steve said. “You didn’t.”
